Double Duty for Edema and Fibrosis Pad

June 15, 2010

The Thora-Thigh Swell Spot (SP-11) (50 cm x 22 cm) was originally designed as a chest and back application and was only made as a Custom Swell Spot, which made it more expensive. However, it soon gained popularity as a leg application. When centered at the groin level with the two ends positioned to cover the medial thigh it works wonders against fibrosis in the thigh. As it gained popularity, Solaris took it out of the Custom Swell Spot category, moved it into regular production and lowered the price. However, don’t overlook the potential of this versatile Swell Spot! Did I mention that it was originally designed for chest wall use? With the scoop positioned in the armpit the wings extend towards the midline at the breastbone and around the back towards the spine. We have had patients find it to be a comfortable chest and breast application, whether they have had a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. Nothing else addresses lateral trunk edema below the axilla like this versatile Swell Spot. When held in place with a stretch shirt or a sports bra, it provides relief and helps to get rid of that “golfball under my armpit” sensation.  Patients seem to like the wide coverage area which gives this Swell Spot an unobtrusive feel as it covers a large enough area to rest easily against the body. And, of course, like all Swell Spots, it has sewn channeling to guide lymphatic fluid away from congested areas. The broad coverage, the chip foam technology and the correct channeling all work together to make this Swell Spot particularly great.

Back from BC

March 10, 2010

We’re back from our trip to beautiful BC! Since we are Ontario-based, this was a trip into springtime for us. We hosted an open house in Victoria and visited with some great businesses in Vancouver. We were also able to attend and show our products at the British Columbia Lymphedema Association’s (BCLA) Lymphedema Awareness Day event.  This event was the first of its kind in Canada as the BCLA took this opportunity to honour patients who live with lymphedema. This recognition honours their struggle and their fortitude. Hopefully the BCLA will make this an annual event.

We want to thank everyone who made time to see us, who came to the open house in Victoria, or attended the BCLA Lymphedema Awareness Day event in Burnaby. We really enjoyed the chance to meet with so many patients, therapists, fitter and retailers who are involved in lymphedema care.  We hope to see you again next year!

Swell Spots in Multi-Layer Bandages

February 2, 2010

The post we did on Swell Spots generated enough interest that we felt there was more to say. In lymphedema treatment multi-layer compression bandaging plays a big role. Foam placed under the bandaging helps to disperse the bandage pressures and apply a massaging effect to the swelling. This gently encourages the release of proteins as well as fluid and results in areas that were hardening beginning to soften. This allows swelling to be reduced more easily.

Sometimes the foam normally used in the bandaging process just isn’t specific enough, and there are some areas that are harder to apply adequate pressure to. This is where Swell Spots can come in handy. One of their best uses is under compression bandaging. The therapist places the Swell Spot between layers of the bandaging, placing it right where it is needed. For instance, one place in the arm where the doughy protein kind of swelling tends to gather is along the bone in the forearm, from elbow to wrist. This is a great place for a Katina Swell Spot, which is made to nestle right along the ulna (the bone in the forearm). When the pressure of the bandaging is applied over it, the Katina foam chips settle right into the space where the protein gathers and gently begins to soften the area and help resolve the swelling.

Each of the Swell Spots has a particular function, and all of them are versatile enough to have many functions, including some we haven’t thought of yet. Visit our website (www.LymphedemaDepot.com) to have a look at all of the Swell Spots; there are more than 20 different designs. Let us know what new uses you find for them!
