Swell Spots in Multi-Layer Bandages

The post we did on Swell Spots generated enough interest that we felt there was more to say. In lymphedema treatment multi-layer compression bandaging plays a big role. Foam placed under the bandaging helps to disperse the bandage pressures and apply a massaging effect to the swelling. This gently encourages the release of proteins as well as fluid and results in areas that were hardening beginning to soften. This allows swelling to be reduced more easily.

Sometimes the foam normally used in the bandaging process just isn’t specific enough, and there are some areas that are harder to apply adequate pressure to. This is where Swell Spots can come in handy. One of their best uses is under compression bandaging. The therapist places the Swell Spot between layers of the bandaging, placing it right where it is needed. For instance, one place in the arm where the doughy protein kind of swelling tends to gather is along the bone in the forearm, from elbow to wrist. This is a great place for a Katina Swell Spot, which is made to nestle right along the ulna (the bone in the forearm). When the pressure of the bandaging is applied over it, the Katina foam chips settle right into the space where the protein gathers and gently begins to soften the area and help resolve the swelling.

Each of the Swell Spots has a particular function, and all of them are versatile enough to have many functions, including some we haven’t thought of yet.
