Lymphedema Depot: A Cool Tribute

Now that we are well into summer, many of us are feeling the heat and humidity. In some areas even the nights have been unpleasantly warm and humid. Since we know that heat and humidity aggravates lymphedema and can cause the swelling to increase, how can you cope with wearing a bulky nighttime garment to help control your swelling? We know that the Tribute is breathable, moisture wicking and cooling to wear, but the hot summertime can be extreme!

This tip for wearing the custom-made Tribute nighttime bi-directional quilted compression garment comes to us from Texas where it has been known to get hot, via Solaris, the U.S. manufacturer of the Tribute.

So how do they keep cool in Texas? They put their Solaris Tribute into a plastic bag, seal it, and place it in the refrigerator (not the freezer!) in the morning. Then they take it out at night and put it on to wear overnight. Reportedly, the Tribute stays cool and comfortable all night. That’s one way to beat the heat!

Lymphedema Depot Announces New Colours for Solaris Tribute

Lymphedema Depot is happy to announce that the Solaris Tribute is now available in Canada in five different colours. Tribute’s original standard black fabric will still be available, as will the more recently added soft pink, but in response to popular feedback from customers, Tribute custom-made lymphedema garments are now also available in teal, maroon and royal blue.

Tributes in these new colours are manufactured with the same amazingly comfortable fabric that Tribute users already know and love. This special fabric blend wicks moisture away from the body and has exceptional breathability as well as antimicrobial properties to keep the wearer cool, comfortable and feeling fresh. Custom-made Tribute nightwear garments are also machine washable and can go right in the dryer at low-heat settings, offering significantly simplified yet effective lymphedema maintenance and treatment while the wearer sleeps.

New Products for Lymphedema Patients

Caresia Bandage Liners make multi-layered bandaging routines much faster and easier, decreasing patient stress and increasing therapeutic results. Foam chips address tissue induration and pad irregularities. Patients gain independence in a shorter time. Simply don the Caresia and then, using a spiral or figure-eight wrapping style with 50% overlap, wrap over top of the Caresia with short-stretch bandages to provide compression and customize fit. The short-stretch bandages should be applied to provide a snug, but not tight fit.

Caresia Bandage Liner Leg Covers simplify the bandaging process even further. The smooth, stretch fabric adds a boost to the compression, and can help short stretch bandages and bandage liners to stay snag-free, remain cleaner, last longer and maintain a lower profile through the wearer’s daily activities.

Double Duty for Edema and Fibrosis Pad

The Thora-Thigh Swell Spot (SP-11) (50 cm x 22 cm) was originally designed as a chest and back application and was only made as a Custom Swell Spot, which made it more expensive. However, it soon gained popularity as a leg application. When centered at the groin level with the two ends positioned to cover the medial thigh it works wonders against fibrosis in the thigh. As it gained popularity, Solaris took it out of the Custom Swell Spot category, moved it into regular production and lowered the price. However, don’t overlook the potential of this versatile Swell Spot! Did I mention that it was originally designed for chest wall use? With the scoop positioned in the armpit the wings extend towards the midline at the breastbone and around the back towards the spine. We have had patients find it to be a comfortable chest and breast application, whether they have had a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. Nothing else addresses lateral trunk edema below the axilla like this versatile Swell Spot. When held in place with a stretch shirt or a sports bra, it provides relief and helps to get rid of that “golfball under my armpit” sensation. Patients seem to like the wide coverage area which gives this Swell Spot an unobtrusive feel as it covers a large enough area to rest easily against the body. And, of course, like all Swell Spots, it has sewn channeling to guide lymphatic fluid away from congested areas. The broad coverage, the chip foam technology and the correct channeling all work together to make this Swell Spot particularly great.

Lymphedema Publications Now Available

The International Lymphedema Framework has made some high-quality publications available on their website, www.Lympho.org. To find the publications click on the Resources button in the left-hand menu silo on their home page. You will find the Best Practices for the Management of Lymphoedema, which is a valuable resource for any therapist or clinic. There are also Position Documents launched during the second ILF Conference in Brighton in March. Of special note are two on subjects that are too difficult to find information on: The Care of Children with Lymphoedema, and The Management of Lymphoedema in Advanced Cancer and Oedema at the End of Life. These are great additions to the literature of lymphedema care (or lymphoedema as the English would say) and I encourage you to have a look at them if you have an interest in these subjects.

Lymphedema Symposium in Alberta

The Alberta Lymphedema Association is holding their 2010 Education Symposium on May 17th, at the Clara Christie Theatre Foothills Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, in Calgary. The symposium features a presentation by Dr. Andrea Cheville of the Mayo Clinic and Pierre-Yves von der Weid, PhD , a researcher at the university of Calgary. There will be presentations geared to medical professionals who provide lymphedema care, lymphedema patients and physicians. There is no charge for this event.
